I grew up in a small village just outside York, where my parents encouraged all four of their
children to go to Sunday School, and that for me developed into being part of the choir, confirmed
fairly young, a bellringer, server and crucifer. All of these jigsaw pieces fell into place in my late
teenage years when I suddenly grasped what the Christian faith is all about in terms of knowing and following
Jesus here and now. Shortly after that the curate at the church suggested that I keep an open mind about future ordination.
This was the same time as preparing to go off to Bath University, where I studied Mathematics with an Education option.
It resulted in me graduating and becoming a teacher in a comprehensive school in north Essex. Having met Hilary at university
we started married life together in this new setting. It wasn’t long before thoughts about ordination returned, and we
eventually started training at Wycliffe Hall theological college in Oxford.
Since then we have served in churches in Westcliff-on-Sea and Rayleigh, both in Essex, and then most recently in Sidcup, Kent.
John and Clare have added to the changes in our life along this journey, and are presently both studying at
university, Cambridge and Brunel respectively.
Our favourite type of holiday is caravanning, and we enjoy getting out onto some of the lower walking areas such as in
the Lake District. We’re looking forward to being closer to the Peak District and to discovering the paths in South Yorkshire.
It might be worth pointing out at this moment that an appreciation of the great outdoors has not resulted in any skill in the garden,
and that this is most definitely an opportunity for shared ministry!
We believe the Lord has guided us to this new post, and so it is with anticipation that we seek to hear what the Spirit
is saying to the churches, that we might join in and see his kingdom being built in this district.
