The Churchyard

churchyard

The Churchyard is well worth a visit, both for its interesting flora and fauna and also for the very interesting gravestones and memorials.
Near to the tower door is the grave of Robert Millthorpe with its unusual inscription.
Canon Sorby’s grave is also nearby.
Further down into the churchyard you will find the memorials to the Houghton Main Cage Disaster (1886) and the Lundhill Colliery Disaster (1857).

Ebenezer Elliott, the ‘Corn Law Rhymer’, is buried here and is the only grave with its railings still intact.
He campaigned against the Corn Laws of the early 19th century.
The ‘Corn Law Rhymes’ earned him international recognition.
