The Chancel Arch

Before the Reformation there was a rood (cross) screen here, where mass was celebrated. A flight of stairs would have given access to the rood loft. You can see a piscina (small arched recess) in the pillar above the lectern, where the chalice would have been washed. This is a rare example of a rood loft piscina in its original place.

The Chancel

The chancel and sanctuary floors were covered in marble mosaic in 1897. In the walls are numerous signs of the alterations which have taken place over the centuries, for example the arches cutting through former windows.
The organ pipes belong to an organ built in 1882. However this organ suffered substantial water damage following the theft of lead from the church roof, and was replaced in 2009 by the current, Makin digital, organ.
